Quick Introduction: A case is something marks the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other elements in a sentence

Nominative is the noun/pronoun that does the action (Example: I eat the apple, "I" is the nomative)

Accusative/Direct Object is the noun/pronoun that the action is done to (Example: I eat the apple, "apple" is accusative/direct object)

Dative/Indirect Object is the noun/pronoun that recieves the action (Example: I read the boy a story, boy is dative/indirect object)

Genitive is the noun/pronoun that has a possession, but the topic is the possession itself (Example: The boy's toy. "boy's" is genitive)

In swedish, nouns do not have cases except for genitive

There are two ways to make genitve: 1- We add the suffix -s to the noun that has the possession

mannens bil (a man's car)

applenas bil (an apple's car)

2- adding the word "av", "pa" or "till" before the noun that has the possession

ett bord av trä (a table made of wood) (use "av" to express a material)

taket på huset (the roof of the house) (use "pa" to express a body part or for idiomatic)

Jag gav boken till Anna. (I gave the book to Anna.) (add the word "till" before the indirect object)

Swedish English

upp up

ner down

in in

ut out

hem home

bort away

fram forward

tillbaka back

förbi past

igenom through

omkring around

These are especially important because Swedish uses many particle adverbs with verbs:

gå ut = go out

gå in = go in

gå upp = go up

gå ner = go down

komma tillbaka = come back

gå bort = go away

40. Adverbs formed from adjectives

Swedish frequently uses the neuter form of an adjective as an adverb.

Adjective Adverb English

snabb snabbt quick → quickly

långsam långsamt slow → slowly

tydlig tydligt clear → clearly

försiktig försiktigt careful → carefully

vacker vackert beautiful → beautifully

rolig roligt fun → amusingly

allvarlig allvarligt serious → seriously

ärlig ärligt honest → honestly

enkel enkelt simple → simply

noggrann noggrant careful → carefully

For example:

Han talar tydligt.

“He speaks clearly.”

Here tydligt is historically/grammatically the neuter form of tydlig, functioning adverbially.

41. Productive -vis adverbs

The suffix -vis creates many adverbs meaning roughly “in a … way / by … / on a … basis.”

Swedish English

delvis partly

vanligtvis usually

möjligen possibly

sannolikt probably

slutligen finally

ursprungligen originally

vanligen usually

egentligen actually

huvudsakligen mainly

This is also a productive/semiproductive pattern, so it is impossible to make a genuinely finite “every single” list.

43. Formal/literary adverbs

Swedish English

emellertid however

således thus

följaktligen consequently

likväl nevertheless

sålunda thus

förvisso indeed

alltjämt still

därvid thereby/in that connection

därmed thereby

därtill furthermore

hädanefter henceforth

hädan from here

varvid whereby/whereupon

dessförinnan before that

One important grammatical point

Swedish adverbs have several different sources:

Basic lexical adverbs:

här = here, nu = now, inte = not

Adjective → adverb:

snabb → snabbt = quick → quickly

Fixed adverbial expressions:

till och med = even, då och då = now and then

Directional/verb-particle adverbs:

upp, ner, in, ut, bort, tillbaka

Sentence/modal adverbs:

kanske, nog, förmodligen, faktiskt, tyvärr

Productive formations:

forms ending in -ligen, -vis, etc.

10- CONJUNCTIONS:

Swedish Transliteration English Example Translation

och och and Jag läser och skriver. I read and write.

eller eller or Vill du ha kaffe eller te? Do you want coffee or tea?

men men but Jag vill gå, men jag är trött. I want to go, but I am tired.

utan utan but rather / but instead Det är inte svart utan vitt. It is not black but white.

för för for / because Jag stannar, för jag är trött. I am staying, for I am tired.

så så so Jag var trött, så jag gick hem. I was tired, so I went home.

samt samt and / as well as Han läser och skriver samt arbetar. He reads, writes, and works.

The seven traditional coordinating conjunctions

och, eller, men, utan, för, så, samt

These are the core Swedish samordnande konjunktioner.

2. “And” conjunctions

Swedish English Example

och and Anna och Erik kommer.

samt and / as well as Vi säljer mat samt dryck.

såväl ... som both ... and Han talar såväl svenska som engelska.

både ... och both ... and Hon talar både svenska och engelska.

varken ... eller neither ... nor Han talar varken svenska eller norska.

inte bara ... utan också not only ... but also Hon är inte bara smart utan också snäll.

både ... och and similar paired structures are often called correlative conjunctions or conjunctive pairs, although the individual words may belong to different grammatical categories.

3. “Or” conjunctions

Swedish English Example

eller or Kaffe eller te?

antingen ... eller either ... or Antingen går vi eller stannar vi.

varken ... eller neither ... nor Jag vill varken äta eller dricka.

vare sig ... eller whether ... or Vare sig du vill eller inte måste du gå.

om ... eller whether ... or Jag vet inte om han kommer eller inte.

4. “But” conjunctions

Swedish English Example

men but Jag vill komma, men jag kan inte.

utan but rather / but instead Han är inte sjuk utan trött.

utan att without / without doing Han gick utan att säga något.

inte ... utan not ... but Det är inte kaffe utan te.

Important distinction

men = ordinary contrast:

Jag är trött, men jag arbetar.

I am tired, but I work.

utan = correction after a negative:

Det är inte rött utan blått.

It is not red but blue.

5. Subordinating conjunctions — Underordnande konjunktioner

These introduce subordinate clauses (bisatser).

5.1 Cause — “because / since”

Swedish Transliteration English Example Translation

eftersom eftersom because / since Jag stannar eftersom jag är trött. I am staying because I am tired.

därför att därför att because Jag stannar därför att jag är trött. I am staying because I am tired.

då då since / because Då du är här kan vi börja. Since you are here, we can begin.

emedan emedan because / since Han stannade emedan det regnade. He stayed because it was raining.

eftersom att eftersom att because Jag gick eftersom att jag var trött. I left because I was tired.

eftersom and därför att are the main everyday forms.

6. Time conjunctions

Swedish English Example

när when Jag ringer när jag kommer hem.

medan while Hon läser medan han sover.

innan before Ät innan du går.

förrän before / until Gå inte förrän jag kommer.

sedan since/after Sedan han kom har allt förändrats.

sedan ... since Sedan hon flyttade har jag saknat henne.

efter att after Efter att han kom gick vi hem.

så snart som as soon as Jag ringer så snart som jag kommer fram.

så fort som as soon as Kom så fort som du kan.

så länge som as long as / while Du kan stanna så länge som du vill.

tills until Vänta tills jag kommer.

för att ... skulle so that ... would Han kom tidigt för att han skulle hinna allt.

Strictly:

så att = subordinating conjunction

för att often introduces an infinitival purpose phrase rather than a finite subordinate clause.

10. Result / consequence

Swedish English Example

så att so that / so ... that Det regnade så att vi stannade hemma.

så ... att so ... that Han var så trött att han somnade.

så mycket ... att so much ... that Hon skrattade så mycket att hon grät.

huruvida is more formal.

31. Conjunction-like words that are technically adverbs

This distinction is important if you want a strict grammatical list.

Swedish has many words that connect clauses but are technically conjunctive adverbs / satsadverbial or connective adverbs, not conjunctions.

Swedish English Example

därför therefore Det regnade. Därför stannade vi hemma.

därmed thereby/thus Han vann och därmed gick han vidare.

dessutom moreover Hon arbetar. Dessutom studerar hon.

dock however Det är svårt. Dock är det möjligt.

ändå nevertheless Det regnade. Ändå gick vi ut.

däremot on the other hand/however Jag gillar kaffe. Däremot gillar han te.

alltså therefore/so Han är sjuk, alltså stannar han hemma.

således thus/therefore Resultatet är således tydligt.

följaktligen consequently Han var sjuk. Följaktligen stannade han hemma.

emellertid however Det är emellertid svårt.

likväl nevertheless Han fortsatte likväl.

sedan then/afterward Sedan gick vi hem.

därefter afterward Därefter gick vi hem.

först first Först åt vi.

slutligen finally Slutligen gick vi hem.

So, for example:

men = conjunction

däremot = adverb

Both can express contrast, but grammatically they are different.

32. Fixed conjunctional expressions

Swedish English

därför att because

trots att although/despite the fact that

även om even if/even though

så att so that
