2- NOUN CASES

Quick Introduction: A case is something marks the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other elements in a sentence

Genitive is the noun/pronoun that has a possession, but the topic is the possession itself (Example: The boy's toy. "boy's" is genitive)

Adjectives don't have any cases except vocative:

bunule băiat! (O good boy!) (We add the suffix -ule to the adjective, we also put the adjective before the noun instead of after it)

noi să fi fost that we have been

voi să fi fost that you have been

ei/ele să fi fost that they have been

= I am glad to have been there.

13. Present Infinitive

a fi = to be

= I want to be...

14. Perfect Infinitive — "to have been"

15. Gerund — "being"

fiind = being

Example:

Fiind obosit, am plecat.

= Being tired, I left.

16. Perfect Gerund

Romanian does not normally use a separate English-style perfect gerund form such as having been as a productive tense. Depending on the sentence, it uses constructions such as:

după ce am fost...

= after I was/had been...

or

după ce a fost...

= after he/she was/had been...

17. Imperative

The imperative is not a tense, but it is useful to include it with a fi.

Romanian adverbs are formed in several ways.

A. Adjective used adverbially

Some adjectives can function directly as adverbs:

Adjective Adverbial use English

bun bine good → well

rău rău bad → badly

rapid rapid rapid → rapidly

clar clar clear → clearly

frumos frumos beautiful → beautifully

încet încet slow → slowly

ușor ușor easy → easily

B. -mente

A productive pattern is:

adjective (usually feminine form) + -mente

For example:

clar claramente clearly

evident evidentemente evidently

normal normalmente normally

natural naturalmente naturally

special specialmente especially

general generalmente generally

sigur seguramente surely

total totalmente totally

absolut absolutamente absolutely

real realmente really

C. Fixed/adverbial forms

Many common adverbs cannot simply be predicted from an adjective:

aici — here

acolo — there

unde — where

când — when

cum — how

acum — now

ieri — yesterday

mâine — tomorrow

mereu — always

încă — still

deja — already

-ul the băiatul the boy

-le the casele the houses

-ele the florile the flowers

Basic pattern

Gender/number Indefinite Definite

masculine singular un băiat băiatul

feminine singular o fată fata

feminine plural niște fete fetele

Romanian therefore differs from English because the definite article is generally postposed/enclitic:

băiat = boy

băiatul = the boy

2. Indefinite articles — Articol nehotărât

Romanian English

un a/an

o a/an

niște some

Examples

Romanian English

un băiat a boy

o fată a girl

niște băieți some boys

niște fete some girls

3. Demonstrative determiners — Adjective pronominale demonstrative

Romanian has several degrees of demonstrative distance.

cea that/the one

cei those/the ones

cele those/the ones

When modifying a noun, forms such as cel can occur in special constructions:

cel dintâi om

the first man

cea mai mare casă

Here cel/cea/cei/cele are particularly important in superlative constructions.

Romanian has forms emphasizing location/distance:

19. Necessity vs lack of necessity

This distinction is important:

Romanian English

Trebuie să plec. I must/have to leave.

Nu trebuie să plec. I must not leave / I don't have to leave.

Nu e nevoie să plec. I don't need to leave.

Nu este necesar să plec. It is not necessary for me to leave.

Nu sunt nevoit să plec. I don't have to leave.

Nu am voie să plec. I am not allowed to leave.

So nu trebuie să should not automatically be translated as “must not.”

Romanian uses the conditional mood extensively for hypothetical, polite, or softened modality.
