Examples:

Singular Plural

žmogus žmonės

dantis (tooth) dantys

Some nouns also insert or lose vowels or slightly modify the stem when endings are added. These patterns are common enough that they are usually learned alongside each noun rather than being completely predictable.

žmogus (person)

Singular Plural

žmogus žmonės

Stem change

žmog- → žmon-

Examples

žmogus → žmonės

vaikas → vaikai (regular)

Only a small number of common nouns show major stem alternations like žmogus.

Common Stem Changes

Lithuanian often changes the stem before certain endings.

2. sesuo → seser-

Nominative Other Cases

Masculine Vocative

Lithuanian uses the vocative frequently when directly addressing someone.

Examples

draugas drauge!

sūnus sūnau!

brolis broli!

Examples in sentences:

Jonai, ateik! — Jonas, come!

Sūnau, klausyk! — Son, listen!

Locative Endings

The locative answers "where?".

Examples

Nominative Locative

namas name (in the house)

miestas mieste (in the city)

knyga knygoje (in the book)

upė upėje (in the river)

pilis pilyje (in the castle)

pilis pilimi

sūnus sūnumi

Example sentences:

Rašau pieštuku. — I write with a pencil.

Important: After the preposition su ("with"), the noun must be in the instrumental case:

su broliu — with a brother

su seserimi — with a sister

su draugais — with friends

Genitive Plural

The genitive plural is one of the least predictable forms in Lithuanian. Many nouns simply take -ų or -ių, but the exact choice can depend on the declension and stem.

Examples

Singular Genitive Plural

namas namų

knyga knygų

brolis brolių

pilis pilių

sūnus sūnų

upė upių

gėlė gėlių

Because of these variations, dictionaries typically list the genitive singular (and sometimes the genitive plural) to help identify a noun's declension.

INDIRECT OBJECT: Subject + verb + direct object (accusative) + indirect object (dative)

I give a book to my friend. Duodu knygą draugui.

FOR VERB OF SAYING: Subject + say + person (Dat.) + information (Acc.)

I tell my friend the truth. Aš sakau draugui tiesą.

GENITIVE: Possessor (genitive) + possessed noun

Mokinio knyga. The student's book.

po darbo

after work

PRIEŠ

prieš namą

in front of the house

prieš tai before that

priešais opposite/in front of

Many of these are not simple prepositions; some are combinations of preposition + noun, adverbs, or other constructions.
