WAS GOING TO:

1. “Was going to” = intended/planned to do something

The most natural construction is:

bija + infinitive

English Latvian

I was going to read Es grasījos lasīt.

You were going to read Tu grasījies lasīt.

He was going to read Viņš grasījās lasīt.

We were going to read Mēs grasījāmies lasīt.

You were going to read Jūs grasījāties lasīt.

They were going to read Viņi grasījās lasīt.

However, grasīties + infinitive is often more natural for “intend/plan to.”

Examples

Es grasījos ēst.

I was going to eat.

Viņa grasījās zvanīt viņam.

She was going to call him.

Mēs grasījāmies doties mājās.

We were going to go home.

2. “Was going to” = was about to

For something that was just about to happen, Latvian commonly uses:

gatavojās + infinitive

or

tūlīt + verb

Examples:

Es gatavojos iet prom.

I was about to leave / I was getting ready to leave.

Viņš gatavojās sākt darbu.

He was about to start work.

Es tūlīt gāju prom.

I was just about to leave.

3. “Was going to” = future in the past

Sometimes English “was going to” describes something that was expected to happen later from a past viewpoint.

Latvian often simply uses the conditional or a future construction in a past context, depending on the meaning.

English:

He said that he was going to come.

Latvian:

Viņš teica, ka viņš nāks.

He said that he would come / was going to come.

Here nāks is the future tense.

4. Negative “wasn't going to”

For intention, use negrasīties:

Es negrasījos to darīt.

I wasn't going to do that.

Viņš negrasījās nākt.

He wasn't going to come.

Mēs negrasījāmies palikt.

We weren't going to stay.
