TO BE VERB (am/is/are):

Present tense

English pronoun Italian Essere English

I io sono I am

you tu sei you are

he lui è he is

she lei è she is

we noi siamo we are

you (plural) voi siete you are

they loro sono they are

Examples

Io sono italiano. → I am Italian.

Lui è felice. → He is happy.

Lei è mia sorella. → She is my sister.

Noi siamo studenti. → We are students.

Voi siete pronti. → You are ready.

Loro sono amici. → They are friends.

Italian normally drops the pronoun because the verb already shows who the subject is:

Sono stanco. → I am tired.

Sei felice. → You are happy.

Siamo pronti. → We are ready.

Imperfect: "was / were"

Pronoun Italian English

io ero I was

tu eri you were

lui/lei era he/she was

noi eravamo we were

voi eravate you were

loro erano they were

Examples:

Ero stanco. → I was tired.

Eri a casa. → You were at home.

Eravamo felici. → We were happy.

Erano studenti. → They were students.

Future: "will be"

Pronoun Italian English

noi saremo we will be

voi sarete you will be

loro saranno they will be

Examples:

Sarò a casa. → I will be at home.

Sarai felice. → You will be happy.

Conditional: "would be"

Pronoun Italian English

tu saresti you would be

lui/lei sarebbe he/she would be

noi saremmo we would be

voi sareste you would be

loro sarebbero they would be

Example:

Sarei felice. → I would be happy.

Negative

Simply put non before essere:

Non sono stanco. → I am not tired.

Non sei italiano. → You aren't Italian.

Non è difficile. → It isn't difficult.

Non siamo pronti. → We aren't ready.

Non erano a casa. → They weren't at home.

Questions

Italian usually forms a question through intonation, without changing the word order.

Sei italiano? → Are you Italian?

È pronta? → Is she ready?

Siete studenti? → Are you students?

Sono in ritardo? → Am I late?

Essere + adjective

Just like English be + adjective:

Sono felice. → I am happy.

Sei stanco. → You are tired.

È grande. → It is big.

Siamo pronti. → We are ready.

The adjective must generally agree in gender and number:

Lui è stanco. → He is tired.

Lei è stanca. → She is tired.

Loro sono stanchi. → They are tired.

Loro sono stanche. → They are tired. (all feminine)

Essere + noun

You can also use essere + noun:

Sono uno studente. → I am a student.

Sono una studentessa. → I am a female student.

Lui è un medico. → He is a doctor.

Lei è una cantante. → She is a singer.

Essere for location

Italian also uses essere for where someone/something is:

Sono a casa. → I am at home.

Sei a Roma. → You are in Rome.

È in ufficio. → He/she is in the office.

Siamo a scuola. → We are at school.

For "there is/there are," however, Italian normally uses c'è / ci sono, not simply è / sono:

C'è un libro. → There is a book.
