1- GREEK ALPHABET

(THE LETTERS ON THE LEFT ARE THE CAPITAL OF THE LETTERS ON THE RIGHT):

Α α -> Άλφα (Álfa) (a as in father) αγάπη (agápi) – love

Β β -> Βήτα (Víta) (v as in very) βιβλίο (vivlío) – book

FINAL SIGMA:

Greek has two lowercase forms of sigma:

σ → used at the beginning or middle of a word.

ς → used only at the end of a word.

DOUBLE LETTER SPELLINGS:

Some vowel combinations produce a single sound:

αι -> e

ει -> ee

οι -> ee

υι -> ee

ου -> oo

CONSONANT COMBINATIONS:

μπ -> b (or mb)

THE LETTER Γ (GAMMA):

This is one of the trickiest letters.

Before α, ο, ου it sounds like a soft, voiced throat g (similar to Spanish g in lago).

Before ε or ι, it sounds like y in yes.

THE LETTER Χ (CHI):

It has two pronunciations:

Before α, ο, ου: a harsh kh sound (like German Bach or Scottish loch)

Before ε, ι: a softer version of the same sound

4. “Was about to” — different meaning

For “was about to”, Greek commonly uses:

ήμουν έτοιμος να + V

ímoun étoimos na + V

= I was about to + verb

For feminine:

ήμουν έτοιμη να + V

ímoun étoimi na + V

Example:

Ήμουν έτοιμος να φύγω.

Ímoun étoimos na fýgo.

= I was about to leave.

2- NOUNS:

CASES:

Quick Introduction: A case is something marks the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other elements in a sentence

Nominative/Subject is the noun/pronoun that does the action (Example: I eat the apple, "I" is the nomative)

Accusative/Direct Object is the noun/pronoun that the action is done to (Example: I eat the apple, "apple" is accusative/direct object)

Dative/Indirect Object is the noun/pronoun that recieves the action (Example: I read the boy a story, boy is dative/indirect object)

Genitive is the noun/pronoun that has a possession, but the topic is the possession itself (Example: The boy's toy. "boy's" is genitive)

Vocative is the noun that is used to call someone (Example: Boy!)
