GERMAN GRAMMAR

1- LETTERS

The letters in german are the same in english but there are 4 extra letters:

1- UMULAUT LETTERS

An umulaut is two dots above a letter that changes the sound of it and can change the meaning of the word, It is above only these letters: a, o, u

a, o, u -> ä, ö, ü

we use the umulaut for the following:

- To mark the plural form of a noun

Gast (guest) → Gäste (guests)

Buch (book) → Bücher (books)

(Go to the next lesson if you want to know about plural)

- For a lot of irregular verbs in second person (you) and singular third person (He, she, it) forms

fahren (to drive) → du fährst (You drive)

2- ESZETT (ß)

In german, there is a letter called Eszett (ß) and it makes a sharp S sound, It is after vowels and is never at the beginning of the word

We use ß for the following:

- After long vowels (Long vowels are vowels that make the same sound as the letter name [Example: street, rope])

groß (big), Straße (street)

- After short vowels but we use it in -ss form (Short vowels are vowels that do not make the same sound as the letter name [Example: cat])

Fluss (river), Kuss (kiss)

If the eszett is uppercase, we use SS instead of ß. However, in modern days, there is an uppercase eszett (ẞ), but it is not widely used

groß → GROSS/GROẞ

Straße → STRASSE/STRAẞE

2- NOUNS

There are articles that refer to a certain type of noun

DEFINITIVE ARTICLES (The):

der (the) -> (male)

die (the) -> (female)

das (the) -> (neuter)

die (the) -> (plural)

INDEFINITIVE ARTICLES (a/an):

ein (a/an)

HOW TO MAKE PLURAL:

1- Adding -e suffix (used a lot for male and neuter nouns)

2- Adding -er suffix, sometimes with an umulaut -> (used a lot for neuter nouns)

3- Adding -n or -en -> (used a lot for female nouns)

4- Adding -s -> (used a lot for foreign words)

5- No change, but sometimes an umulant is added

3- CASES

A case is something that marks the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other elements in a sentence:

German has four cases:

Nomative: The noun that does the action.

Example: The boy eats the apple (Boy is nomative)

Accusative: The noun that the action is done to.

Example: The boy eats the apple. ("apple" is accusative)

Dative: The noun that receives something.

Example: I give the book to a person ("person" is dative)

Genitive: A case to show a noun that has a possession but the topic is the possession itself.

Daniel's book / The book of daniel (Daniel's is genitive and daniel is genitive)

We use these cases for articles:

NOMATIVE:

der (the) -> (male)

die (the) -> (female)

das (the) -> (neuter)

die (the) -> (plural)

ein (a/an) -> (male)

eine (a/an) (female)

ein (a/an) -> (neuter)

ACCUSATIVE:

den (the) -> (male)

die (the) -> (female)

das (the) -> (neuter)

die (the) -> (plural)

einen (a/an)

eine (a/an)

ein (a/an)

DATIVE:

dem (the) -> (male)

der (the) -> (female)

dem (the) -> (neuter)

den (the) -> (plural)

einem (a/an) -> (male)

einer (a/an) -> (female)

einem (a/an) -> (neuter)

Ich gebe dem Mann das Buch. (I give the man the book / I give the book to the man)

GENITIVE (THE GENITIVE NOUN IS AFTER THE POSSESSION IN GERMAN):

des -> (male)

der -> (female)

des -> (male)

der -> (plural)

eines -> (male)

einer -> (female)

eines -> (neuter)

der Hund des Mannes (The dog of the man)

4- ADJECTIVES

We add a suffix to the adjective depending on the case, gender and number of people (only if the adjective is before the noun):

NOMATIVE:

ein kleiner Hund (a small dog)

eine kleine Katze (a small cat)

ein kleines Kind (a small child)

kleiner Hund (Small dog)

kleine katze (Small cat)

kleines kind (Small child)

kleine Hunde (Small dogs)

kleine katzen (Small cats)

kleine kinder (Small children)

der kleine Hund (The small dog)

die kleine Katze (The small cat)

das kleine Kind (The small child)

die kleinen Hunde (The small dogs)

die kleinen Katzen (The small cats)

die kleinen Kinder (The small children)

ACCUSATIVE:

kleine -> kleinen (with an accusative article before it)

If plural, then it is the same as nomative

DATIVE:

kleine -> kleinen (with a dative article before it)

If there is no article, then we add the -m suffix insead of -n:

kleniem Hund

If plural, then we add the -n suffix to the noun:

kleinen Hunden

kleinen katzen

GENITIVE:

kleine -> kleinen

The noun that is described by the adjective has the -s or -es suffix (-es is common for one syllable nouns, while -s is common for longer nouns):

des kleinen hundes

If plural, we do not add the -s suffix or -es suffix:

der klenien hunde

If there is no article for plural, then we add a certain suffix to the adjective depending on the gender, we also do not add the -s suffix:

kleiner hunde

kleine katzen

kleines kinder

If the adjective is after the noun, there is no change:

Der hund ist klein

1. Present tense — Präsens

Pronoun sein English

ich bin I am

du bist you are

er ist he is

sie ist she is

es ist it is

wir sind we are

ihr seid you are

sie sind they are

Sie sind you are (formal)

Examples

2. Simple Past — Präteritum

ihr wart you were

sie/Sie waren they/you were

Examples:

Ich war müde.

I was tired.

Sie war zu Hause.

She was at home.

Wir waren glücklich.

3. Perfect — Perfekt

The perfect of sein itself is:

Structure:

sein (present) + gewesen

German English

Ich bin gewesen I have been

Du bist gewesen You have been

Er ist gewesen He has been

Wir sind gewesen We have been

Ihr seid gewesen You have been

Sie sind gewesen They have been

Example:

Ich bin dort gewesen.

I have been there.

However, in everyday German, war is often preferred over ist gewesen when simply describing a past state:

Ich war in Berlin.

I was in Berlin.

4. Past Perfect — Plusquamperfekt

Structure:

war/waren + gewesen

Ich war dort gewesen.

I had been there.

Wir waren in Berlin gewesen.

We had been in Berlin.

5. Future — Futur I

Structure:

werden + sein

Ich werde müde sein.

I will be tired.

Er wird zu Hause sein.

He will be at home.

Wir werden glücklich sein.

We will be happy.

6. Future Perfect — Futur II

Structure:

7. Konjunktiv II — "would be"

The most important forms are:

Sie Seien Sie! Be!

wir Seien wir! Let's be!

Examples:

Sei vorsichtig!

Be careful!

Seien Sie geduldig!

Be patient!

10. Infinitive and Participle Forms

Form German English

Infinitive sein to be

Present participle seiend being

Past participle gewesen been

Examples:

sein = to be

gewesen = been

11. "To Be" + Adjective

German uses sein + adjective.

Ich bin glücklich.

I am happy.

Er ist müde.

He is tired.

Sie ist schön.

She is beautiful.

The adjective does not need an ending when it is the predicate:

Das Haus ist groß.

The house is big.

Compare:

ein großes Haus

a big house

Das Haus ist groß.

The house is big.

12. "To Be" + Noun

German uses sein + noun for identity or profession.

Ich bin Student.

I am a student.

Er ist Lehrer.

He is a teacher.

Sie ist Ärztin.

She is a doctor.

Notice that professions after sein generally have no indefinite article:

Ich bin Arzt.

I am a doctor.

But with an adjective:

Ich bin ein guter Arzt.

I am a good doctor.

13. "To Be" + Location

Ich bin zu Hause.

I am at home.

Er ist in Berlin.

He is in Berlin.

Wir sind im Park.

We are in the park.

14. "There is" vs "to be"

Don't confuse sein with es gibt.

"There is a book."

Es gibt ein Buch.

"The book is on the table."

Das Buch ist auf dem Tisch.

So:

sein = to be

es gibt = there is/there are

entweder ... beziehungsweise either ... respectively

sei es ... sei es whether ... or

einerseits ... andererseits on the one hand ... on the other

German English

dass that

ob whether

wie how

wann when

warum why

weshalb why

wieso why

wo where

wohin where to

woher where from

wer who

was what

welcher which

Strictly speaking, wer, was, welcher, wann, warum, etc. are not all conjunctions; they introduce different types of subordinate/interrogative clauses.

30. Indirect-question conjunctions

German English

ob whether

wann when

wo where

wohin where to

woher where from

warum why

weshalb why

wieso why

wie how

wie viel how much

wie viele how many

welcher which

Examples:

Ich weiß nicht, ob er kommt.

= I don't know whether he is coming.

Ich weiß nicht, wann er kommt.

= I don't know when he is coming.

Ich weiß nicht, warum er gegangen ist.

= I don't know why he left.

31. Negative-condition conjunctions

solange wie as long as

Example:

ohne ... zu without ...-ing

Er ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden.

= He left without saying goodbye.

ohne ... zu is technically an infinitive construction, not a conjunction.

34. “Instead of”

German English

anstatt dass instead of

statt dass instead of

anstatt ... zu instead of ...-ing

statt ... zu instead of ...-ing

Example:

Er spielt, anstatt dass er arbeitet.

= He plays instead of working.

More commonly:

Er spielt, anstatt zu arbeiten.

= He plays instead of working.

35. Concession with indefinite pronouns

German can create powerful no-matter constructions:

German English

wer auch immer whoever

was auch immer whatever

wo auch immer wherever

wann auch immer whenever

wie auch immer however

welcher auch immer whichever

wohin auch immer wherever / to wherever

woher auch immer from wherever

wie sehr auch immer however much

36. Formal/literary conjunctions

German English

obgleich although

obschon although

obzwar although

wenngleich although

auf dass so that

sofern provided that

indes whereas / however

indessen whereas / however

nachdem after

ehe before

sofern provided that

37. Older/literary conjunctions

German English

obzwar although

obschon although

obgleich although

wenngleich although

zumal especially since

auf dass so that

wiewohl although

sintemal since / because — archaic

dieweil while/because — archaic/literary

indes whereas / meanwhile

indessen whereas / meanwhile

insofern insofar as

insoweit insofar as

38. Connective words often mistaken for conjunctions

These are extremely common but are technically adverbs or other connective elements, not subordinating conjunctions.

German English

deshalb therefore

deswegen therefore

daher therefore

darum therefore

trotzdem nevertheless

dennoch nevertheless

jedoch however

allerdings however

außerdem furthermore

zudem moreover

ferner furthermore

somit thus

folglich consequently

demnach accordingly

hingegen whereas / in contrast

dagegen in contrast

stattdessen instead

nämlich namely

übrigens by the way

jedenfalls in any case

schließlich finally / after all

immerhin nevertheless / at least

This distinction matters because these words usually give main-clause word order:

Es regnet. Trotzdem gehe ich.

= It is raining. Nevertheless, I am going.

Compare:

Obwohl es regnet, gehe ich.

= Although it is raining, I am going.

The crucial word-order rule

Type Example Word order

Coordinating Ich komme, und er geht. normal main-clause order

Subordinating Ich bleibe, weil ich müde bin. finite verb at end

Correlative Entweder komme ich, oder er geht. each clause follows its normal structure

Connective adverb Ich bin müde. Deshalb gehe ich. verb remains in 2nd position
