spí He sleeps / He is sleeping

spí She sleeps / She is sleeping

spí It sleeps / It is sleeping

spíme We sleep / We are sleeping

spíte You sleep / You are sleeping

oni spí They sleep / They are sleeping

Present Continuous: Spím. I am sleeping.

Present Perfect: Spal jsem. I have slept. (Context tells you this.)

Present Perfect Continuous: Spím už dvě hodiny. I have been sleeping for two hours.

Past Simple (male speaker): Spal jsem. I slept.

spal jsi You slept.

spal he/she/it slept

spali jsme we slept

spali jste you slept

spali they slept

Past Continuous: Spal jsem. I was sleeping.

Past Perfect: Spal jsem už předtím. I had slept already. (Context; the old pluperfect exists but is very rare.)

Past Perfect Continuous: Spal jsem už dvě hodiny. I had been sleeping for two hours.

Future Simple: Budu spát. I will sleep.

Future Continuous: Budu spát. I will be sleeping.

Future Perfect: Do rána se vyspím. I will have slept (well/enough) by morning.

Future Perfect Continuous: Zítra budu spát už osm hodin. By tomorrow I will have been sleeping for eight hours.

Imperative: Spi! Sleep!

Perfective: vyspím

In Czech, you just have to memorize the future, past and present pattern of a verb along with its perfective partner.

Now you might be wondering, why does the word spím change when it is present perfect but píšu does not? Well, because perfective means you have completed an action. Píšu means write, and writing can be finished, but for spím (sleep), there is no such thing as finishing sleeping.

Main Czech determiner patterns

Czech usually puts the determiner before the noun:

Type Formation Example Transliteration English

Demonstrative ten + noun ten dům ten dům that/the house

Demonstrative tento + noun tento dům tento dům this house

Possessive můj + noun můj dům můj dům my house

Reflexive possessive svůj + noun svůj dům svůj dům one's own house

Interrogative který + noun který dům? který dům? which house?

Interrogative jaký + noun jaký dům? jaký dům? what kind of house?

Indefinite nějaký + noun nějaký dům nějaký dům some house / a certain house

Negative žádný + noun žádný dům žádný dům no house

Universal každý + noun každý dům každý dům every house

Universal všechen + noun všechen čas všechen čas all the time

Quantifier několik + noun několik domů několik domů several houses

Quantifier hodně + noun hodně domů hodně domů many houses

Quantifier málo + noun málo domů málo domů few houses

Other jiný + noun jiný dům jiný dům another/other house

Same stejný + noun stejný dům stejný dům the same house

Free-choice jakýkoli + noun jakýkoli dům jakýkoli dům any house

Numeral dva + noun dva domy dva domy two houses

Ordinal první + noun první dům první dům the first house

Important point about „the“

Czech has no definite article equivalent to English the.

So:

dům = a house / the house / house

The context determines whether it means “a house” or “the house.”

Czech can use demonstratives such as ten when a specific/identifiable noun needs to be emphasized:

ten dům

ten dům

that house / the particular house

So ten is sometimes functionally similar to English the, but it is not literally a Czech definite article.
