34. Important compound adverbs

Bulgarian frequently creates adverbs from combinations of words.

Bulgarian Transliteration English

веднага vednaga immediately

постепенно postepenno gradually

внезапно vnezapno suddenly

изведнъж izvednazh suddenly

предварително predvaritelno beforehand

впоследствие vposledstvie subsequently

междувременно mezhduvremenno meanwhile

приблизително priblizitelno approximately

окончателно okonchatelno finally/definitively

временно vremenno temporarily

постоянно postoyanno constantly

едновременно ednovremenno simultaneously

последователно posledovatelno consecutively

независимо nezavisimo independently/regardless

случайно sluchayno accidentally

нарочно narochno intentionally

36. Formation of Bulgarian adverbs

A very common way of forming manner adverbs is from adjectives using the neuter singular form.

Adjective Adverb Transliteration English

бърз бързо barzo fast/quickly

бавен бавно bavno slow/slowly

добър добре dobre good/well

лош зле zle bad/badly

лесен лесно lesno easy/easily

труден трудно trudno difficult/difficultly

внимателен внимателно vnimatelno careful/carefully

спокоен спокойно spokoyno calm/calmly

сериозен сериозно seriozno serious/seriously

точен точно tochno exact/exactly

For example:

бърз

barz

fast

→ бързо

barzo

quickly

Той говори бързо.

Toy govori barzo.

He speaks quickly.

37. Adverb placement

Bulgarian has relatively flexible word order, so adverbs can occur in different positions depending on emphasis, information structure, and the type of adverb.

Beginning

Днес аз работя.

Dnes az rabotya.

Today I am working.

Middle

Аз днес работя.

Az dnes rabotya.

I am working today.

End

Аз работя днес.

Az rabotya dnes.

I am working today.

So, as with the other languages you've been studying, “beginning / middle / end” generally means the adverb has some flexibility, but not every adverb is equally flexible.

Important: words such as обаче (obache, “however”), затова (zatova, “therefore”), следователно (sledovatelno, “therefore”) and всъщност (vsŭshtnost, “actually”) are not prepositions; they belong to other grammatical categories even though they can connect parts of discourse.

Also, няма a/an/the-type articles as separate prepositions—Bulgarian has a definite article system attached to nouns, but that is a different grammatical category.

17. Bulgarian definite article

This is particularly important because Bulgarian does have definiteness, but the definite article is generally postposed, unlike English.

Masculine singular

Form Transliteration Meaning

-ът -ŭt the

-ят -yat the

-а -a the

-я -ya the

Examples:

човекът — chovekŭt — the person

учителят — uchitelyat — the teacher

човека — choveka — the person

учителя — uchitelya — the teacher

The full forms -ът/-ят are normally used for masculine singular subjects, while -а/-я are used in many nonsubject positions.

Feminine singular

Bulgarian Transliteration English

-та -ta the

книгата — knigata — the book

Neuter singular

Bulgarian Transliteration English

-то -to the

детето — deteto — the child

Plural

Bulgarian Transliteration English

-те -te the

книгите — knigite — the books

18. Definite article with adjectives

The article can attach to the adjective rather than directly to the noun:

Bulgarian Transliteration English

новият човек noviyat chovek the new person

новата книга novata kniga the new book

новото дете novoto dete the new child

новите книги novite knigi the new books

Compare:

нов човек

nov chovek

a new person / new person

новият човек

noviyat chovek

the new person

19. The indefinite article equivalent

Bulgarian does not have a dedicated grammatical equivalent of English a/an.

The numeral един / една / едно (edin / edna / edno) can function similarly:

Bulgarian Transliteration English

един човек edin chovek a man / one man

една книга edna kniga a book / one book

едно дете edno dete a child / one child

So:

един човек = edin chovek = a man / one man

but един is fundamentally the numeral “one”, rather than an exact equivalent of the English indefinite article.

One important grammatical note: if we're being strict, words such as много, малко, повече, първи, различен, конкретен are not all members of a single formal Bulgarian “determiner” word class. They are adjectives, numerals, pronouns, or quantifier-like words that can perform a determiner-like function. This broader classification is the most useful equivalent when learning Bulgarian alongside English.
