16- REPORTED SPEECH AND DIRECT SPEECH

HOW TO FORM NOMINALIZED CLAUSE:

Before we learn reported speech/direct speech, we need to know about nominalized clauses:

A nominalized clause turns a complete sentence into a noun phrase. It functions like English:

that he came

that she is reading

that they will go

Instead of using that, Azerbaijani usually nominalizes the verb.

Step 1 — Put the Subject into the Genitive

The subject of the embedded clause becomes genitive.

Normal → Genitive

mən → mənim

sən → sənin

o → onun

biz → bizim

siz → sizin

onlar → onların

Əli → Əlinin

Example:

Əli gəlir.

Ali comes.

↓

Əlinin...

Ali's...

Step 2 — Remove the Finite Verb Ending

Take the verb stem.

Example:

gəlmək

↓

gəl-

Step 3 — Add the Correct Nominalizer

The nominalizer depends on the tense or meaning.

completed action

-(y)DIK — gəldik-

future

-(y)AcAQ — gələcək-

ability

biləcəy — gələ biləcəy-

obligation

-məli olduğ — getməli olduğ-

ongoing action (often context-dependent)

-(y)DIK — oxuduğ-

Step 4 — Add the Possessive Suffix

The nominalized verb behaves like a noun, so it receives a possessive suffix showing who performs the action.

I

-im/-ım/-um/-üm — gəldiyim

you (sg.)

-in/-ın/-un/-ün — gəldiyin

he/she

-i/-ı/-u/-ü — gəldiyi

we

-imiz/-ımız — gəldiyimiz

you (pl.)

-iniz/-ınız — gəldiyiniz

they

-ləri/-ları or 3rd person singular possessive — gəldiyi

Examples:

gəldiyim

that I came

gəldiyin

that you came

gəldiyi

that he/she came

Step 5 — Add the Required Case

If the clause functions as an object, destination, source, etc., add the appropriate case ending.

Nominative

— gəldiyi

Accusative

-ni/-nı — gəldiyini

Dative

-nə/-na — gəldiyinə

Locative

-ndə — gəldiyində

Ablative

-ndən — gəldiyindən
